Botanical Name: Aspidistra Elatior
Commonly known as : Cast Iron Plant
Aspidistra Elatior care guide
Light Requirements:
Aspidistras do very well in bright light but prefer full shade and absolutely no sun. In medium lit rooms or patios the green on the leaves tend to become much richer in colour.
Watering needs:
Watering these plants once a week and letting them dry out between watering is the best option. They are called the Cast Iron plant for a reason – so even with prolonged periods of being dry – they will still survive.
However – regular watering does help keep the growth at a good pace!
Humidity requirements:
Aspiristra arn’t really fussy about humidity – no humidity…
Fertilizing:
As with all plants, fertilizing is very important. They will enjoy being fertlized at least every week to two weeks with a general liquid fertlizer, or a water soluble fertlizer like Grobest
Soil:
In time you will find that your Aspidiatra will start outgrowing it’s pot and you will need to upsize the pot and give him a fresh mix. They can grow in a multitude of soil types but it’s always good practice to give them something with a well draining soil mixture that has good moisture retention.
Try and only use a premium potting mix such as the Gromor Potting Soil and it’s always good practice to add in perlite that will assist with good drainage, plus peat moss and coir husks that will hold in some moisture.
