Botanical name: Hoya kerrii
Commonly known as:Â Sweetheart Plant | Heart Plant
Hoya Kerrii is best known for its heart-shaped leaves, but in its full form it offers far more than the single-leaf plants often seen. This is a properly established plant, with multiple leaves growing along structured stems, giving it both height and presence.
The leaves are thick, firm, and slightly waxy. Their shape remains consistent as the plant grows, creating a repeating pattern that feels balanced and intentional. At around 60–70cm tall, it already has enough height to stand on its own while still remaining manageable.
Unlike softer foliage plants, Hoya Kerrii holds its structure. The stems grow steadily, and as they mature, they can be allowed to climb or trail depending on how the plant is positioned. Over time, it becomes fuller as new leaves develop along the vines.
Because the plant stores moisture in its leaves, it handles less frequent watering well. This makes it a practical option for indoor spaces where consistent care may vary.
With good light and patience, mature plants can also produce clusters of star-shaped flowers, adding another layer of interest without changing the plant’s overall form.
Hoya Kerrii Care Guide
Watering – How often should it be watered?
Allow the growing medium to dry out between waterings. Hoya Kerrii stores moisture in its leaves, so it prefers a drier cycle. Water thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain fully.
Light – What light does Hoya Kerrii need?
Bright, indirect light works best. Good light supports steady growth and helps maintain compact, healthy stems. Some gentle morning sun is beneficial.
Humidity – Does it need extra humidity?
Average indoor humidity is suitable. Moderate humidity can support stronger growth and flowering.
Soil – What soil works best?
Use a well-draining, breathable medium. Milled Bark Growing Medium works particularly well, providing excellent airflow and preventing excess moisture around the roots. You can add Perlite if you want even faster drainage, but it is not essential.
Feeding – How should it be fertilised?
Feed during the growing season with Grobest Organic Fertiliser every 4–6 weeks. For stronger growth and flowering, Novatec Soluble Fertiliser can be used.
Repotting – When should it be repotted?
Hoyas prefer to be slightly root-bound, so repot every 2–3 years or when necessary. Move up one size only. When repotting, refresh with Milled Bark Growing Medium and incorporate TerraPlus Natura N and Controlled Release Fertiliser.
Pests – What pests should I watch for?
Watch for mealybugs and aphids along stems and leaf joints. Treat early with an insecticidal spray if needed.
Temperature – What temperature suits it best?
Hoya Kerrii grows well between 18°C and 28°C. Avoid temperatures below 12°C and protect from cold drafts.
