Commonly known as: Controlled Release FertilizerÂ
Product Name: Haifa Multicote 8
If I could recommend just one fertiliser for almost every plant I sell, this would probably be it.
Controlled Release Fertilizer takes the guesswork out of feeding your plants. Instead of remembering to fertilise every few weeks, a single application continues feeding your plants for up to 8 months under normal growing conditions.
Each fertiliser granule is coated with a specialised polymer. When the growing medium is watered, moisture moves through the coating and dissolves a small amount of nutrients inside the granule. As temperatures rise, nutrients are released gradually into the root zone where the plant can use them. This steady release avoids the sudden flushes of nutrients that occur with conventional fertilisers and provides a much more consistent supply of nutrition.
This is one of the reasons commercial nurseries rely on controlled release fertilisers. Plants receive a continuous supply of nutrients as they grow, encouraging stronger root systems, steady leaf production and healthier overall growth without the peaks and troughs associated with repeated liquid feeding.
The premium Multicote 8 formulation contains a balanced blend of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, together with magnesium and essential trace elements. Every granule works as a tiny nutrient reservoir, feeding the plant gradually over many months.
Controlled Release Fertilizer is suitable for virtually every ornamental plant. Whether you’re growing Monsteras, Philodendrons, Anthuriums, Hoyas, Ficus, Orchids, Ferns, Succulents or Palms, this fertiliser provides reliable nutrition with very little effort.
I use it in almost every growing mix because it’s one of the simplest ways to give plants a consistent source of nutrients throughout the growing season.
Controlled Release Fertilizer details
What makes Controlled Release Fertilizer different?
Unlike water-soluble fertilisers that feed the plant all at once, Controlled Release Fertilizer feeds gradually over many months. Every watering activates a small amount of nutrients, providing a consistent supply without large nutrient spikes.
What nutrients does it contain?
The premium Multicote 8 formulation contains:
- Nitrogen (15%) – supports healthy leaf growth.
- Phosphorus (3%) – encourages root development.
- Potassium (12%) – improves overall plant strength and water regulation.
- Magnesium – essential for chlorophyll production.
- A full range of trace elements for balanced plant growth.
How do I use it when repotting?
Mix the granules evenly through fresh growing medium before potting.
Suggested rates:
- 12–14cm pots: 1–2 teaspoons
- 16–20cm pots: 2–4 teaspoons
- 23–30cm pots: 4–6 teaspoons
Heavy feeders such as Monsteras, Philodendrons, Palms and Bird of Paradise will benefit from the upper end of these rates.
Can I top-dress established plants?
Yes.
Simply sprinkle the granules evenly over the surface of the growing medium and water thoroughly. Each watering will gradually activate the fertiliser.
How long does it last?
Under normal growing conditions the Multicote formulation feeds plants for approximately 8 months. Warmer temperatures increase nutrient release, while cooler temperatures naturally slow the release to match slower plant growth.
Can I use it with Organic Fertiliser?
Absolutely.
Controlled Release Fertilizer provides a steady background supply of nutrients, while Grobest Organic Fertilizer improves soil biology and supplies additional organic nutrition. The two products work exceptionally well together.
Is it suitable for every plant?
Yes.
It’s suitable for almost every ornamental plant including:
- Monsteras
- Philodendrons
- Anthuriums
- Ficus
- Hoyas
- Orchids
- Ferns
- Snake Plants
- ZZ Plants
- Alocasias
- Dracaenas
- Palms
- Succulents
- Outdoor container plants
FAQ’s
Q: Why is Controlled Release Fertilizer better than liquid fertiliser?
Liquid fertilisers provide nutrients immediately but require regular applications. Controlled Release Fertilizer feeds gradually over many months, giving plants a much more consistent nutrient supply.
Q: Will it burn my plants?
When used at the recommended rates, no. The polymer coating releases nutrients gradually, greatly reducing the risk of fertiliser burn compared with conventional fertilisers.
Q: How often do I need to apply it?
Only once every 8 months under normal growing conditions.
Q: Can I use it on indoor plants?
Yes. It is one of the easiest and most effective fertilisers for indoor plants because it provides continuous feeding with very little maintenance.
Q: Can I use it together with Grobest Organic Fertiliser?
Yes. They complement each other very well. Controlled Release Fertilizer provides a steady nutrient supply, while Grobest contributes organic nutrition and supports a healthy growing medium.
Q: Does it still work during winter?
Yes. Nutrients are released more slowly in cooler weather because the coating responds to temperature. This naturally matches the slower growth of most plants during winter.
