Name

Commonly known as: Kokedama Brasil

Plant name: Philodendron Brasil

Kokedama is a traditional Japanese planting style where the root ball is wrapped in moss instead of being grown in a pot. In this version, the ever-popular Philodendron Brasil becomes a living object rather than a standard houseplant.

Philodendron Brasil is well suited to kokedama growing thanks to its adaptable roots, forgiving nature, and steady growth. Its heart-shaped green leaves are streaked with lime-yellow variegation, adding movement and colour without overwhelming the clean, natural form of the moss ball.

Kokedama plants invite a slightly more hands-on relationship with watering, but the care is simple once you find a rhythm. Whether displayed on a dish or suspended with string, a Kokedama Brasil brings a calm, organic feel to shelves, desks, and windows with bright, indirect light.

Kokedama Brasil Care Guide

Water logo

Watering – How do I water a Kokedama?

Water by soaking the moss ball in a bowl of room-temperature water for 10–15 minutes. Allow excess water to drain fully before returning it to display. Watering is usually needed every 5–10 days, depending on temperature and airflow. The moss should feel slightly dry before re-soaking.

Light logo

Light – What light does a Kokedama Brasil need?

Bright, indirect light is ideal. It tolerates moderate light, but brighter conditions help maintain the yellow-green variegation. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can dry the moss and scorch the leaves.

Humidity logo

Humidity – Does a Kokedama need extra humidity?

Average indoor humidity is usually sufficient. However, kokedamas do benefit from slightly humid air. Light misting of the moss between soakings can help prevent it from drying out too quickly.

Soil Logo

Soil – What is inside the moss ball?

The root ball is formed using a compacted soil blend designed to retain moisture while still allowing airflow. Over time, the moss acts as a visual moisture indicator — lighter moss usually means it’s time to water.

Fertilizing logo

Feeding – How do I fertilise a Kokedama?

Feed lightly during spring and summer by adding a very diluted dose of our Organic Fertiliser to the soaking water once every 4–6 weeks. Avoid overfeeding, as nutrients are held close to the roots.

Repotting logi

Repotting – Does a Kokedama need repotting?

Kokedamas don’t follow traditional repotting schedules. After 12–24 months, the plant can either be refreshed with new moss or planted into a pot if it outgrows the ball.

Pest image

Pests – What pests should I watch for?

Philodendron Brasil is generally pest-resistant. Occasionally, spider mites or mealybugs may appear. Inspect leaves regularly and treat promptly with an insecticidal spray if needed.

Temerature image

Temperature – What temperature suits it best?

Ideal temperatures range between 18 °C and 28 °C. Keep away from cold drafts, heaters, and air conditioners, which can dry out the moss quickly.
