Milled Bark is a proven growing medium used extensively by commercial growers across South Africa. Its structure provides a balance of drainage, airflow, and moisture retention that supports strong, healthy root systems.

Unlike traditional potting soils, milled bark does not compact easily. This allows oxygen to move freely through the root zone, reducing the risk of overwatering and root rot. At the same time, it retains enough moisture to keep plants hydrated between watering cycles.

One of the key advantages of milled bark is its simplicity. It can be used on its own as a complete growing medium, without the need for additional components. While materials like perlite can be added to adjust structure further, it is not essential for most applications.

The two available sizes allow you to match the substrate to the plant type:

The 12mm grade is finer and holds slightly more moisture, making it well suited to plants with finer root systems. This includes Peace Lilies, ferns, Calatheas, and other plants that prefer a more consistent moisture level while still benefiting from good airflow.

The 19mm grade is chunkier and provides increased drainage and aeration. It works particularly well for plants with thicker, more robust root systems such as Ficus, Philodendrons, Monsteras, and other larger structural plants.

Because it is widely used in the local growing industry, milled bark has already proven itself under South African conditions. It offers a practical, reliable option for both everyday plant care and more specialised growing setups.

Milled Bark Growing Medium Usage Guide

How do you use Milled Bark?

Milled bark can be used as a standalone growing medium or combined with other components depending on your preference. It is suitable for growing and  repotting most indoor plants.

Do you need to mix it with anything?

No. Milled bark works effectively on its own. You can add Perlite if you want to increase drainage further, but it is not necessary.

Watering considerations

Because milled bark drains well, watering frequency may differ slightly from traditional soil. Always check moisture levels before watering and adjust based on your environment.

Soil – What mix is best for Maidenhair Ferns?

For optimal drainage and healthy roots, use our Aroid Mix, or make your own by combining Barks Unlimited Potting Soil and Perlite. The goal is a soft, moisture-holding mix that drains easily and stays airy.

Fertilizing logo

Fertilzing when using Milled Bark

Because bark-based mixes contain less natural nutrients than soil, regular feeding is important. Use Grobest Organic Fertiliser or Novatec Soluble Fertiliser during the growing season.

FAQ’s

Can I use milled bark on its own?
Yes. It is commonly used as a standalone growing medium by commercial growers.

Is it better than potting soil?
It offers better drainage and airflow, which can improve root health, especially for certain plant types.

Which size is better?
It depends on the plant. Finer roots prefer 12mm, while thicker roots benefit from 19mm.

How often should I water plants in bark?
This depends on the environment, but bark typically drains faster than soil, so regular checking is important.
