Commonly known as: Aroid Mix
Product type: Specialist indoor plant growing medium
Aroids thrive when their roots can breathe. This Aroid Mix has been carefully formulated to provide the balance that indoor aroids need — free drainage, consistent moisture retention, and long-lasting structure that doesn’t collapse over time.
Rather than relying on fine, compactable components, this mix focuses on creating air pockets throughout the root zone. That airflow is critical for preventing root rot, supporting active root growth, and allowing plants to cope better with indoor conditions where evaporation is slower than outdoors.
The blend includes a combination of structural and moisture-holding elements that work together rather than against each other. Coarser materials keep the mix open and breathable, while buffered organic components help retain just enough moisture without becoming soggy. Activated carbon is included to support root health and keep the mix fresh over time.
This mix is suitable for use straight out of the bag and is ideal for repotting established plants or potting up young aroids as they grow. It’s particularly well suited to philodendrons, monsteras, alocasias, syngoniums, and other plants that naturally grow with their roots exposed to air in the wild.
Aroid mix Uses
Water Management – How does Aroid Mix affect watering?
The open structure allows excess water to drain quickly while still holding enough moisture for roots to access between waterings. This helps reduce overwatering issues and root rot.
Use – What is Aroid Mix best used for?
Aroid Mix is designed for indoor aroids that require excellent drainage and airflow. It’s suitable for both climbing and self-heading varieties and works well in pots with drainage holes.
Aeration – Why is airflow important for aroids?
Aroid roots naturally grow in airy environments. This mix maintains open air spaces in the pot, ensuring roots stay oxygenated and active.
Feeding – Should fertiliser be added to Aroid Mix?
Yes. While the mix provides structure and moisture balance, nutrients should be added separately. Controlled-release fertiliser can be incorporated during repotting, and liquid feeding can be applied during the growing season.
Repotting – When should Aroid Mix be used?
Use Aroid Mix when repotting or potting up aroids that have outgrown their current container. It’s also ideal when upgrading plants onto moss poles or support structures.
Longevity – Does this mix break down over time?
The components are chosen for stability and longevity. While all organic mixes change slowly over time, this blend maintains structure far longer than standard potting soils.
