Commonly known as: Corn Plant
Botanical name: Dracaena fragrans (Massangeana)
Corn Plant is one of the most reliable and adaptable indoor plants for homes and offices. The upright foliage grows from a central stem, producing long arching leaves with rich green colouring and a lighter lime-green stripe running through the centre.
At around 30cm tall in a 14cm pot, this “1 Foot” size is compact enough for desks, shelves, counters, and smaller indoor spaces while still offering strong structure and fullness. The foliage naturally arches outward as it matures, creating a softer tropical appearance without becoming untidy.
Dracaena Massangeana is valued for its ability to adapt to a wide range of indoor conditions. It tolerates medium light particularly well and remains presentable even with minimal maintenance, making it one of the easiest structured foliage plants to grow indoors.
The leaves maintain a clean glossy appearance, while the upright growth habit allows the plant to add height without excessive width. Over time, the stem gradually thickens and the canopy becomes fuller as new leaves emerge from the centre.
Corn Plants are particularly effective in offices and modern interiors because they provide a lush tropical feel while still maintaining a neat and controlled appearance.
This is a dependable indoor plant chosen for longevity, structure, and ease rather than delicate or demanding growth.
Corn Plant Care Guide
Watering – How often should I water a young Corn Plant?
Water when the top 3–4 cm of soil feels dry. These plants prefer to dry out slightly between waterings. Overwatering is the most common issue, so always allow excess water to drain away.
Light – What light does a Corn Plant need?
Bright, indirect light is ideal, but Corn Plants are very tolerant of lower light conditions. Growth will be faster and more compact in brighter positions. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
Humidity – Does it need extra humidity?
Average household humidity is perfectly fine. Corn Plants cope well with dry indoor air, although occasional misting can help keep leaf tips looking neat, especially in winter.
Soil – What soil mix works best?
Use a well-draining mix that doesn’t stay wet for too long. We recommend our Aroid Mix or a DIY blend using Barks Unlimited Potting Soil combined with Perlite. Good drainage is key for young plants.
Feeding – How should I fertilise it?
Feed lightly every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with our Organic Fertiliser. You can also add a small amount of
Controlled Release Fertiliser to support slow, steady growth.
Repotting – When should I repot a Corn Plant?
Repot every 12–18 months, or once roots start filling the pot. Move up one pot size at a time. Corn Plants prefer being slightly snug rather than over-potted.
Pests – What pests should I watch for?
They’re generally pest-resistant, but keep an eye out for spider mites or mealybugs, especially in very dry conditions. Wipe leaves clean and treat with an insecticidal spray if needed.
Temperature – What temperature is best?
Corn Plants thrive between 18 °C and 27 °C. Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature drops. They cope well with normal indoor temperatures year-round.
