Name

Commonly known as: Snake Plant Water Leaf | Water Leaf Snake Plant | Mother-in-laws tongue

Botanical name: Dracaena trifasciata ‘Water Leaf’ | Sanseveria Water leaf (old name)

Snake Plant Water Leaf is one of the more unusual and sought-after variegated Snake Plant cultivars available. The foliage immediately stands out due to its extraordinary colouration, with bright yellow leaves surrounding a contrasting green centre stripe.

Unlike the classic Laurentii, where yellow appears only along the leaf margins, Water Leaf produces foliage that is predominantly yellow. This creates a much brighter and more dramatic appearance that instantly draws attention, even from across a room.

The upright leaves emerge from compact rosettes and gradually develop into a dense architectural clump over time. The intense variegation gives the plant a luminous quality, almost appearing as though the leaves have been highlighted with sunlight.

Because of the high level of variegation, growth is often slower than standard green Snake Plants. However, this slower growth contributes to its rarity and collector appeal. Each new leaf adds to the striking contrast between yellow and green, creating an increasingly impressive display as the plant matures.

Like other Snake Plants, Water Leaf remains remarkably forgiving and adaptable. It combines the ease of care that Snake Plants are famous for with the visual impact usually associated with far more demanding collector plants.

Whether displayed as a standalone specimen or incorporated into a larger indoor plant collection, Snake Plant Water Leaf brings colour, structure, and rarity without requiring constant attention.

Snake Plant Water Leaf Care Guide

Water logo

Watering – How often should it be watered?

Allow the growing medium to dry out completely between waterings.

Snake Plants store water within their leaves and are highly susceptible to overwatering. When in doubt, it is always better to wait a few extra days before watering.

Water less frequently during winter.

Light logo

Light – What light does Snake Plant Water Leaf need?

Bright, indirect light is ideal and helps maintain the strongest yellow colouration.

While it can tolerate lower light conditions, brighter positions generally produce better growth and more vibrant foliage.

Avoid prolonged harsh direct afternoon sun.

Humidity logo

Humidity – Does it need extra humidity?

No. Snake Plant Water Leaf adapts very well to average household humidity and does not require additional humidity.

Soil Logo

Soil – What soil works best?

Use a fast-draining growing medium with excellent airflow around the roots.

Milled Bark Growing Medium works exceptionally well for Snake Plants. Additional Perlite can be incorporated if desired.

Fertilizing logo

Feeding – How should it be fertilised?

Feed lightly during spring and summer using Grobest Organic Fertiliser every 6–8 weeks.

For stronger growth, Novatec Soluble Fertiliser can be used during active growth.

Repotting logi

Repotting – When should it be repotted?

Repot every 2–3 years or once the plant becomes root-bound.

Refresh with Milled Bark Growing Medium and incorporate TerraPlus Natura N and Controlled Release Fertiliser.

Pest image

Pests – What pests should I watch for?

Snake Plants are generally very resistant to pests. Occasionally, mealybugs may appear and should be treated promptly.

Temerature image

Temperature – What temperature suits it best?

Snake Plant Water Leaf grows best between 16°C and 30°C.

Avoid temperatures below 10°C and protect from frost.

FAQ’s

How is Water Leaf different from Laurentii?
Water Leaf has broad yellow foliage across most of the leaf surface, whereas Laurentii only has yellow margins.

Is it as easy to grow as other Snake Plants?
Yes. Despite its rarity, it is just as forgiving and low-maintenance as most Snake Plant varieties.

Why does it grow more slowly?
The high level of variegation reduces chlorophyll, which naturally slows growth compared to fully green plants.

Does it tolerate lower light?
Yes, although brighter light helps maintain stronger colouration and healthier growth.

Is it pet-safe?
No. Like other Snake Plants, it is toxic if ingested.
