Name

Commonly known as: Spider Plant Mini | Hen and Chicken

Botanical name: Chlorophytum comosum

If you’re looking for a houseplant that’s almost impossible to dislike, Spider Plant Mini is right up there.

Its graceful fountain of slender green leaves instantly softens shelves, desks, bedside tables and office spaces without demanding much attention in return. Compact in size but full of personality, it’s a plant that fits just about anywhere.

Spider Plants have earned their reputation as one of the easiest indoor plants for good reason. They’re remarkably adaptable, cope well with the changing conditions found in most homes and quickly forgive the occasional missed watering.

As the plant matures, it begins producing long arching stems with tiny baby plants attached. These little “spiderettes” eventually develop their own roots and can easily be propagated to grow new plants or shared with family and friends.

Originally native to southern Africa, Spider Plants naturally grow beneath shrubs and trees where they receive bright, filtered light and regular rainfall. This makes them perfectly suited to indoor life, thriving in bright rooms while also tolerating lower light levels better than many other houseplants.

Whether you’re buying your very first indoor plant or simply filling a small empty space with something reliable, Spider Plant Mini is a classic that never goes out of style.

Spider Plant Mini Care Guide

Water logo

Watering – How often should I water it?

Allow the top few centimetres of the growing medium to dry before watering thoroughly. Spider Plants store water in their fleshy roots, making them more forgiving than many other houseplants if you occasionally forget to water.

Light logo

Light – Where should I place my Spider Plant Mini?

Spider Plant Mini grows best in bright, indirect light but is wonderfully adaptable. It also performs well in medium light and can tolerate lower light conditions, although growth may slow. Avoid prolonged harsh afternoon sun.

Humidity logo

Humidity – Does it need high humidity?

Spider Plant Mini is happy in normal household humidity and doesn’t require any special attention. It will appreciate slightly higher humidity but performs well in most indoor environments.

Soil Logo

Soil – What growing medium should I use?

A loose, well-draining growing medium keeps the roots healthy. I recommend Milled Bark Growing Medium, which provides excellent airflow while retaining enough moisture for steady growth. You can also add Perlite if you’d like additional drainage.

Fertilizing logo

Feeding – How should I fertilise it?

Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer using Grobest Organic Fertiliser. For faster growth and more baby plants, Novatec Soluble Fertiliser can also be used during the growing season.

Repotting logi

Repotting – When should I repot?

Repot every 1–2 years or once the roots become crowded. Refresh with Milled Bark Growing Medium and incorporate TerraPlus Natura N together with Controlled Release Fertiliser.

Pest image

Pests – What should I look out for?

Spider Plants are generally very resilient but can occasionally attract mealybugs, spider mites or aphids. Healthy plants with good airflow rarely experience serious problems.

Temerature image

Temperature – What’s the ideal temperature?

Spider Plant Mini grows best between 15°C and 28°C. It tolerates cooler temperatures better than many tropical houseplants but should still be protected from frost.

FAQ’s

Q: Is Spider Plant Mini suitable for beginners?
Absolutely. It’s one of the easiest indoor plants to grow and is very forgiving if your watering isn’t always perfect.

Q: What are the little baby plants growing on the stems?
They’re called spiderettes or plantlets. Once they’ve developed small roots, they can be removed and planted to grow into new Spider Plants.

Q: Can Spider Plant Mini grow in low light?
Yes. It tolerates lower light surprisingly well, although brighter indirect light encourages faster growth and fuller foliage.

Q: Why are the tips of my Spider Plant turning brown?
Brown tips are usually caused by inconsistent watering, dry air or a build-up of minerals from tap water. Regular watering and occasional flushing of the growing medium usually helps.

Q: Is Spider Plant Mini pet safe?
Yes. Spider Plants are considered non-toxic to both cats and dogs, making them one of the safest houseplants for pet-friendly homes.
