Name

Commonly known as: Grey Star Prayer Plant

Botanical name: Ctenanthe Setosa

Grey Star Prayer Plant brings contrast and movement into a space through its soft silver foliage. The elongated leaves show a pale grey-green surface with darker green patterning, while the undersides carry a subtle purple tone. This combination gives the plant depth without making it feel heavy.

At around 70cm tall, it already has presence. The leaves rise and spread outward, creating a relaxed but structured shape that works well in living areas or offices. The foliage moves slightly throughout the day, which adds a natural, softer feel compared to more rigid plants.

This plant fills out nicely from the base, so it maintains a balanced and full appearance over time. With stable light and consistent watering, it continues to produce new leaves and build density without becoming unruly.

Grey Star works particularly well where you want contrast against darker plants or to soften a space with lighter tones and flowing foliage.

Grey Star Prayer Plant Care Guide

Water logo

Watering – How often should it be watered?

Keep the soil evenly moist. Water when the top 2–3cm begins to dry out. This plant does not like to dry out completely, so regular checking helps keep it stable. Good drainage is important to prevent the roots from staying too wet.

Light logo

Light – What light does Grey Star Prayer Plant need?

Bright, indirect light works best. It can tolerate medium light, but stronger light keeps the leaf patterning clearer and more defined. Avoid direct sun, as it can fade or scorch the leaves.

Humidity logo

Humidity – Does it need extra humidity?

Grey Star prefers moderate to higher humidity. While it adapts to normal indoor conditions, higher humidity helps maintain smooth leaves and prevents crisping at the edges. Grouping plants together or placing it in naturally humid areas can help.

Soil Logo

Soil – What soil works best?

Use a moisture-retentive but breathable mix. Indoor Potting Soil works well as a base. Improve airflow and drainage by adding Perlite and Bark Chips to keep the mix open.

Fertilizing logo

Feeding – How should it be fertilised?

Feed during the growing season with Grobest Organic Fertiliser every 4–6 weeks. For stronger growth, Novatec Soluble Fertiliser can be used occasionally.

Repotting logi

Repotting – When should it be repotted?

Repot every 12–18 months or when the plant becomes root-bound. Move up one pot size only. When repotting, incorporate TerraPlus Natura N and Controlled Release Fertiliser into fresh mix.

Pest image

Pests – What pests should I watch for?

Spider mites can appear, especially in dry air. Regular inspection and early treatment with an insecticidal spray helps prevent issues.

Temerature image

Temperature – What temperature suits it best?

Grey Star Prayer Plant grows well between 18°C and 28°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C and protect it from cold drafts.
