Name

Commonly known as: Lipstick Plant

Botanical name: Aeschynanthus marmoratus

Aeschynanthus marmoratus is grown as much for its foliage as for its flowers. The leaves are thick and slightly glossy, marked with subtle mottled patterns that add texture and interest even when the plant isn’t in bloom. When flowering, it produces tubular blooms that emerge from darker buds, giving rise to the common name “Lipstick Plant”.

This species naturally trails and fills out quickly when grown in good light, making it well suited to hanging baskets and elevated displays. Because these plants are already mature and full, they offer immediate visual impact without the need for time or training.

Lipstick Plants prefer warmth, stable conditions, and a light, airy potting mix. Once settled, they are reliable and forgiving, provided they aren’t overwatered or exposed to cold conditions.

Lipstick Plant Care Guide

Water logo

Watering – How often should I water it?

Water when the top 3–4 cm of soil feels dry. Lipstick Plants prefer even moisture but do not tolerate soggy soil. Allow excess water to drain away completely, especially in hanging baskets.

Light logo

Light – What light does a Lipstick Plant need?

Bright, indirect light is ideal. Good light encourages healthy growth and flowering. It can tolerate medium light, but growth may slow and flowering may be reduced. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.

Humidity logo

Humidity – Does it need humidity?

Average indoor humidity is usually sufficient, but slightly higher humidity supports healthier foliage and flowering. Grouping with other plants can help maintain a comfortable microclimate.

Soil Logo

Soil – What soil works best?

A free-draining, airy mix is essential. Indoor Potting Soil provides a reliable base. If you’d like to improve aeration further, you can mix in Perlite and Bark Chips to keep roots healthy and oxygenated.

Fertilizing logo

Feeding – How should I fertilise it?

Feed during spring and summer using Grobest Organic Fertiliser every 4–6 weeks. As an alternative, Novatec Soluble Fertiliser can be used occasionally at a low dilution to support leafy growth and flowering.

Repotting logi

Repotting – When should a Lipstick Plant be repotted?

These plants prefer to stay slightly snug in their pots. Repot only every 18–24 months, or when roots are clearly overcrowded. Move up one pot size and keep most of the existing soil intact around the roots. Refresh with Indoor Potting Soil and added Perlite and Bark Chips if needed.

Pest image

Pests – What pests should I watch for?

Lipstick Plants are generally pest-resistant. Mealybugs or aphids may appear on stressed plants. Regular inspection and early treatment with an insecticidal spray will prevent issues from spreading.

Temerature image

Temperature – What temperature suits it best?

Ideal temperatures range between 18 °C and 28 °C. Keep the plant warm during winter and avoid temperatures below 15 °C, as cold conditions can cause leaf drop and reduced growth.
