Name

Commonly known as: Maidenhair Fern

Botanical name: Adiantum raddianum

Maidenhair Ferns are known for their fine, lace-like foliage and light, floating appearance. Unlike sturdier ferns, their thin stems and small leaflets give them a soft texture that brings a calm, natural feel to indoor spaces.

This is a plant that values consistency. Maidenhair Ferns dislike drying out and respond quickly if conditions change, which makes them best suited to areas where light, temperature, and watering can remain steady. When kept evenly moist and protected from harsh sun or drafts, they grow into elegant, full plants that are well worth the extra attention.

They’re particularly well suited to bathrooms, kitchens, or grouped plant displays where humidity levels are naturally higher.

Maidenhair Care Guide

Water logo

Watering – How often should I water it?

Keep the soil consistently moist, but never waterlogged. Water as soon as the surface of the soil begins to dry. Maidenhair Ferns do not tolerate drying out and will often show stress quickly if they do.

Light logo

Light – What light does a Maidenhair Fern need?

Bright, indirect light is ideal. Gentle morning light is fine, but direct sun can scorch the delicate fronds. Too little light can cause weak growth and leaf drop.

Humidity logo

Humidity – Does it need humidity?

Yes. Maidenhair Ferns prefer higher humidity levels. While they can survive in average indoor humidity, they perform best in bathrooms, kitchens, or grouped with other plants where moisture levels stay slightly elevated.

Soil Logo

Soil – What soil works best?

A moisture-retentive but airy mix is essential. Indoor Potting Soil provides a good base. If you’d like to increase aeration and prevent compaction, you can mix in Perlite and Bark Chips to improve airflow around the roots.

Fertilizing logo

Feeding – How should I fertilise it?

Feed gently during spring and summer. You can use a diluted dose of Grobest Organic Fertiliser every 4–6 weeks, or alternatively use Novatec Soluble Fertiliser at a low dilution for its higher nitrogen content, which supports leafy growth. Avoid overfeeding, as ferns are sensitive to salt build-up.

Repotting logi

Repotting – When should a Maidenhair Fern be repotted?

Repot every 12–18 months, or when roots begin to fill the pot. Move up one pot size only and keep most of the existing soil around the root ball intact. When refreshing the mix, Indoor Potting Soil can be combined with Perlite and Bark Chips for improved structure and airflow.

Pest image

Pests – What pests should I watch for?

Maidenhair Ferns are generally pest-free, but stressed plants may attract aphids or spider mites. Regular inspection and early treatment with an insecticidal spray will prevent problems from escalating.

Temerature image

Temperature – What temperature suits it best?

Ideal temperatures range between 16 °C and 24 °C. Protect the plant from cold drafts, heaters, and sudden temperature changes, which can cause rapid leaf loss.
