Name

Commonly known as: Medium Pumice

Product type: Volcanic mineral growing medium

Pumice is a lightweight volcanic rock widely used in plant care to improve drainage, airflow, and root health. This 5–8 mm grade is considered the most versatile size for indoor plants, offering the right balance between structure and moisture management.

Particle size plays a critical role in how a potting mix behaves. Finer pumice can compact over time and restrict airflow, while very coarse grades are better suited to large outdoor containers or specialist applications. This mid-range size allows water to move freely through the pot while still holding small amounts of moisture on the surface of each particle for roots to access.

Because pumice is porous and extremely stable, it does not break down, compress, or alter the chemistry of your potting mix. This makes it a long-term amendment rather than something that needs regular replacement. It helps prevent waterlogged soil, reduces the risk of root rot, and keeps roots well oxygenated — especially important for indoor plants where evaporation is slower.

This size grade is ideal for general indoor plant care, whether you’re refreshing an existing mix, creating a more free-draining blend, or improving airflow in pots that tend to stay wet for too long.

Medium Pumice Uses

Water logo

Use – What is 5–8 mm pumice best used for?

This size is ideal for indoor plants, foliage plants, aroids, and general potting mixes. It improves drainage and root aeration without creating large air gaps that dry out roots too quickly.

Light logo

Water Management – How does pumice affect watering?

Pumice allows excess water to drain away efficiently while holding small amounts of moisture within its porous structure. This creates a more forgiving watering window and helps prevent root rot.

Humidity logo

Aeration – Why is airflow important for roots?

Healthy roots require oxygen. By keeping the potting mix open and breathable, pumice prevents compaction and allows roots to function properly over time.

Soil Logo

Mixing – How should pumice be used in potting mixes?

Pumice can be mixed directly into potting soil to increase drainage or used as a structural component in custom blends. It works particularly well when combined with bark-based soils.

Fertilizing logo

Longevity – Does pumice break down over time?

No. Pumice is inert and long-lasting. It does not decompose, compact, or release salts, making it a stable component in long-term plant care.

Safety – Is pumice safe for plants?

Yes. Pumice is chemically neutral, non-toxic, and safe for indoor and outdoor plant use.

FAQ’s

Q: Why choose 5–8 mm pumice instead of finer grades?
This size offers better airflow and long-term structure without compacting.

Q: Can pumice replace perlite?
It can be used in similar ways, but pumice is heavier, more stable, and doesn’t float or break down.

Q: Is this suitable for all indoor plants?
Yes. This size is suitable for most indoor plants and general potting mixes.

Q: Does pumice add nutrients?
No. Pumice is inert and provides structure only. Nutrients should be supplied separately.
