Commonly known as: Monstera Esqueleto
Botanical name: Monstera esqueleto
Monstera Esqueleto is a highly sought-after climbing Monstera known for its oversized leaves and extreme fenestration. Unlike more common Monsteras, the leaf cut-outs on Esqueleto are deeper and more open, giving the plant its distinctive, almost lace-like appearance.
As a juvenile plant, growth begins modestly, but once established and given support, the leaves increase dramatically in size and complexity. This plant naturally climbs in its native environment, and providing a moss pole or vertical support indoors helps unlock its full potential.
While it does appreciate attentive care, Monstera Esqueleto is not difficult when its basic needs are met. Stable warmth, bright indirect light, and a well-structured growing medium are key. With patience and consistency, it becomes a striking feature plant that continues to impress as it matures.
Monstera Esqueleto Care Guide
Watering – How often should I water it?
Water when the top 3–4 cm of the mix feels dry. Monstera Esqueleto prefers evenly moist soil but is sensitive to waterlogged conditions. Always allow excess water to drain away.
Light – What light does Monstera Esqueleto need?
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Strong light supports larger leaves and better fenestration. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage, especially on younger plants.
Humidity – Does it need humidity?
Yes. While it can adapt to average indoor humidity, higher humidity supports stronger growth and healthier leaf development. Good airflow remains important.
Soil – What soil works best?
A free-draining, airy mix is essential. Our premixed Aroid Mix is well suited and takes the guesswork out of mixing. Alternatively, you can create your own blend using our Indoor Potting Soil as a base, then incorporate Perlite and Bark Chips to improve aeration and keep the root zone healthy.
Feeding – How should I fertilise it?
Feed during the growing season using Grobest Organic Fertiliser every 4–6 weeks. For more vigorous leafy growth, Novatec Soluble Fertiliser can be used occasionally at a low dilution.
Repotting – When should Monstera Esqueleto be repotted?
Repot only when the plant becomes root-bound, typically every 12–18 months. Move up one pot size and keep most of the existing soil intact around the roots. When repotting, you can incorporate TerraPlus Natura N together with Controlled Release Fertiliser into the fresh mix.
Pests – What pests should I watch for?
Spider mites and thrips can occasionally appear, especially in dry conditions. Regular inspection and early treatment with an insecticidal spray will prevent issues from escalating.
Temperature – What temperature suits it best?
Ideal temperatures range between 18 °C and 28 °C. Keep warm in winter and protect from temperatures below 15 °C, which can slow growth significantly.
