Commonly known as: Silver Splash PothosÂ
Botanical name: Scindapsis Silver Splash
Silver Splash Pothos is one of those plants that quietly steals the show.
Its soft green leaves are generously dusted with silver markings, giving each leaf a unique appearance. No two leaves are ever exactly the same. Some display just a light silver wash, while others appear almost entirely silver, creating beautiful contrast throughout the plant.
Unlike the more common Satin Pothos varieties, Silver Splash produces much heavier silver variegation, making the foliage brighter and more eye-catching. As the vines mature, the leaves also become noticeably larger, especially when given something to climb.
Supplied in a 15cm pot, these plants are already well established and beginning to produce their characteristic trailing vines. They look equally beautiful spilling from shelves and hanging baskets or climbing up a moss pole where they naturally produce larger foliage.
Although many people refer to it as a Pothos, Silver Splash actually belongs to the Scindapsus genus. It naturally climbs tree trunks in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia using aerial roots to anchor itself. Because of this, climbing plants often produce much larger and more impressive leaves than trailing specimens.
One of the reasons Silver Splash has become so popular is its forgiving nature. It tolerates typical household conditions well and doesn’t demand constant attention. With bright indirect light, moderate watering and occasional feeding, it will reward you with steady growth throughout the warmer months.
Whether you’re just starting your indoor plant collection or you’re an experienced collector looking for something a little more unusual, Silver Splash Pothos is a plant you’ll never grow tired of admiring.
Silver Splash Pothos Care Guide
Watering – How often should it be watered?
Water once the top 3–5cm of soil has dried out. Keep the soil evenly moist but never saturated. Always allow excess water to drain fully.
Light – What light does Satin Pothos need?
Bright, indirect light works best to maintain strong silver variegation. Medium light is tolerated, although colour contrast may soften slightly. Avoid direct sun, as it can mark the leaves.
Humidity – Does it need extra humidity?
Average indoor humidity is sufficient. Slightly higher humidity can support steadier growth, but misting is not essential.
Soil – What growing medium should I use?
An airy, free-draining growing medium is essential.
I recommend Milled Bark Growing Medium, which provides excellent airflow while retaining just enough moisture for healthy roots.
If you’d like even faster drainage, simply add some Perlite.
Feeding – How should it be fertilised?
Feed during spring and summer with Grobest Organic Fertiliser every 4–6 weeks. For stronger seasonal growth, Novatec Soluble Fertiliser can be used occasionally at reduced strength.
Repotting – When should it be repotted?
Repot every 12–18 months or once roots fill the pot. Move up one size only. When repotting, incorporate TerraPlus Natura N and Controlled Release Fertiliser into fresh mix.
Pests – What pests should I watch for?
Inspect stems and leaf undersides for thrips, spider mites, and mealybugs. Treat early with an insecticidal spray if needed.
Temperature – What temperature suits it best?
Satin Pothos grows well between 18°C and 28°C. Avoid temperatures below 12°C and sudden environmental changes.
