Name

Commonly known as: Sphagnum Moss

Product type: Long-fibre growing medium

Sphagnum moss is a widely used and highly valued growing medium in horticulture, especially for plants that prefer consistent moisture without sitting in water. Its natural structure allows it to absorb and hold large amounts of water while still maintaining airflow around roots.

This makes it particularly useful for mounting plants such as staghorns and orchids, creating kokedamas, lining hanging baskets, or using as a moisture-retentive component in specialised mixes. Sphagnum moss contains no added nutrients, which gives you full control over feeding and reduces the risk of fertiliser burn.

The moss in this bag is supplied fully hydrated, meaning it can be used straight away. Over time, it can be allowed to dry out and stored. When needed again, simply soak it in water for a few hours and it will rehydrate and expand back to usable condition.

As a natural product, you may notice small twigs or bits of organic material mixed in. These do not need to be removed. In fact, they help maintain texture and airflow as the moss settles and compresses over time.

Sphagnum Moss Usage Guide

Water logo

Water – How does sphagnum moss handle moisture?

Sphagnum moss has excellent water-holding capacity. It absorbs water easily and releases it slowly, helping keep roots evenly moist without becoming waterlogged.

Use – What can sphagnum moss be used for?

It’s commonly used for mounting epiphytic plants, making kokedamas, propagating cuttings, lining baskets, or improving moisture retention around sensitive roots.

Feeding – Does sphagnum moss contain nutrients?

No. Sphagnum moss does not provide nutrients on its own. When planting into it, it’s recommended to incorporate a light dose of Controlled Release Fertiliser or to feed regularly with a diluted liquid fertiliser such as Grobest Organic Fertiliser.

Handling – Can sphagnum moss be reused?

Yes. It can be reused multiple times if kept clean and free of decay. Allow it to dry between uses and rehydrate when needed.

Feeding – How should I fertilise my Northern Maidenhair Fern?

Feed lightly once a month during spring and summer with a gentle Organic Fertiliser. For longer-term nutrition, mix in a small amount of Controlled Release Fertiliser in early spring. Skip feeding in winter.

Pests – Can pests live in sphagnum moss?

Clean sphagnum moss is generally pest-free. As with any organic material, it’s best to inspect before use, especially if it has been stored for a long time.

Storage – How should it be stored?

Store unused moss dry in a breathable container. Avoid sealing wet moss in airtight bags, as this can encourage mould.

FAQ’s

Q: Is this moss ready to use straight from the bag?
Yes. It is supplied fully hydrated and can be used immediately.

Q: Can I dry it out and use it later?
Yes. Once dry, it can be stored and rehydrated when needed.

Q: Does it need fertiliser?
Yes. Sphagnum moss contains no nutrients, so plants will need an external feeding source.

Q: Should I remove twigs or debris from the moss?
No. These are natural and help maintain airflow as the moss compresses over time.

Excellent quality sphagnum moss! Wow!
I have bought sphagnum moss from other nurseries before. It has always been poor quality — very broken down and dusty. I accepted this, assuming better-quality moss was only available overseas and not in South Africa. I was pleasantly surprised to receive a truly top-quality product from a local supplier. Thank you, Irvin, for supplying excellent products at reasonable prices!!! It's fluffy; it's clean; there are long strands of the stuff and the bag is heavy!!! Fantastic!!

Fluffiest Sphagnum moss ever!!!
I have bought and used sphagnum moss for many years now, and I have never come across a more fluffy specimen! My experiences include plucking live moss, fresh and green, from Mother Nature herself, and yet those pale in comparison to these! Thank you, @Staghorn&Fern, for sourcing the best possible stock!!!
