Name

Commonly known as: XXL Bamboo Palm

Botanical name: Dypsis Lutesens

The Bamboo Palm is a classic indoor palm known for its relaxed, upright growth and dense, feathery foliage. In this XXL size, it becomes a true feature plant, filling vertical space without feeling heavy or overpowering.

Its multiple slender stems and arching fronds create a natural, layered look that works equally well in modern and more traditional interiors. Despite its size, the Bamboo Palm remains approachable and forgiving, adapting well to everyday indoor conditions when given consistent care.

This palm prefers stability over constant adjustment. Once placed in a suitable position with good light and regular watering, it settles in and maintains its shape with minimal intervention. It’s a great choice if you want something tall and leafy without the fuss often associated with larger indoor plants.

XXl Bamboo Palm Care Guide

Water logo

Watering – How often should I water it?

Water when the top 4–5 cm of the mix feels dry. Bamboo Palms prefer evenly moist soil but do not like sitting in water. Ensure good drainage at all times.

Light logo

Light – What light does an XXL Bamboo Palm need?

Bright, indirect light is ideal. It tolerates medium light well, but growth will be slower. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the fronds.

Humidity logo

Humidity – Does it need humidity?

Average indoor humidity is usually sufficient. Slightly higher humidity can help keep fronds looking fresh, but misting isn’t essential.

Soil Logo

Soil – What soil works best?

A free-draining, airy mix is essential. Our premixed Aroid Mix is well suited and provides excellent structure for healthy roots. Alternatively, you can create your own blend using our Indoor Potting Soil as a base, then incorporate Perlite and Bark Chips to improve aeration and prevent compaction.

Fertilizing logo

Feeding – How should I fertilise it?

Feed during spring and summer using Grobest Organic Fertiliser every 4–6 weeks. If additional growth support is needed, Novatec Soluble Fertiliser can be used occasionally at a low dilution.

Repotting logi

Repotting – When should an XXL Bamboo Palm be repotted?

Repot every 18–24 months, or when roots begin to crowd the pot. Move up one pot size only and keep most of the existing soil intact. When repotting, you can incorporate TerraPlus Natura N together with Controlled Release Fertiliser into the fresh mix.

Pest image

Pests – What pests should I watch for?

Spider mites can appear in very dry conditions. Regular inspection and early treatment with an insecticidal spray will keep problems under control.

Temerature image

Temperature – What temperature suits it best?

Ideal temperatures range between 18 °C and 28 °C. Avoid cold drafts and prolonged exposure below 15 °C, which can cause stress and leaf damage.
