Botanical name: Dypsis Lutescens

The Dypsis Lutescens, or Bamboo Palm, is a timeless indoor favourite. Its slender canes and layered green fronds create a soft, tropical look without demanding much care. Grown to around 90cm tall in a 23cm pot, this palm makes a graceful floor feature while improving air quality indoors.

Large Bamboo Palm Care Guide

Water logo

Watering – How often should I water a Bamboo Palm?

Water when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry — usually once a week in summer and every 10–14 days in winter. These palms dislike sitting in water, so ensure the pot drains freely. Slightly dry is better than constantly damp.
Light logo

Light – Where should I place my Palm?

Bright, indirect light suits it best. It tolerates lower light better than most palms but grows fuller in medium light. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the delicate fronds.

Humidity logo

Humidity – Does a Palm like humidity?

Yes — it loves a bit of moisture in the air. Normal indoor humidity is fine, but in dry climates a gentle misting once or twice a week helps keep leaf tips from browning.

Soil Logo

Soil – What soil mix works best for palms?

For optimal drainage and healthy roots, use our Aroid Mix, or create your own by combining Indoor Potting Soil with Perlite. A light, well-aerated mix prevents compaction and keeps roots healthy.

Fertilizing logo

Feeding – How often should I fertilise a Palm?

Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced Organic Fertiliser. For steady, slow release, mix in a little Controlled Release Fertiliser at the start of the season. Hold off during winter when growth slows.

Repotting logi

Repotting – When should I repot my Palm?

Repot every 18–24 months or when roots begin to crowd. Move to a slightly larger pot and refresh with new mix. Adding Bark Chips helps improve aeration and keeps the soil loose.

Pest image

Pests – What pests affect Bamboo Palms?

They’re generally resilient, but keep an eye out for spider mites and mealybugs in dry indoor air. Wipe fronds occasionally with a damp cloth and treat with an insecticidal spray if needed.

Temerature image

Temperature – What’s the ideal temperature range?

They thrive between 18 °C and 28 °C. Avoid cold drafts, heaters, or air-conditioning vents that can dry or chill the foliage.

Q: Is the Bamboo Palm safe for pets?
Yes, it’s non-toxic to cats and dogs — a perfect pet-friendly indoor palm.

Q: Why are the leaf tips turning brown?
Usually from low humidity or inconsistent watering. Mist lightly and check your watering routine.

Q: How tall can a Bamboo Palm grow indoors?
With time and good care, they can reach 1.5 – 2 m indoors, staying elegant and compact.

Q: Can I grow a Bamboo Palm outdoors?
Yes, in shaded or semi-shaded spots protected from frost. It adapts beautifully to patios and courtyards.
