Name

Commonly known as: Medium Bamboo Palm

Botanical name: Dypsis Lutescens

Bamboo Palm brings a softer, more natural feel into a space. The slender stems rise in clusters, each carrying fine, feathery fronds that spread outward and create a relaxed, layered look. This gives the plant movement without making it feel messy or overgrown.

At around 60–70cm tall, it provides enough height to stand on its own while still fitting comfortably into most indoor spaces. The multiple stems in each pot help create a fuller appearance, so the plant looks established from the start rather than sparse.

Unlike heavier foliage plants, Bamboo Palm lightens a room. The fine texture of the leaves works well alongside broader-leaf plants and helps balance out more structured arrangements. It adapts easily to indoor conditions and continues producing new growth from the base, gradually increasing in fullness.

With consistent care and stable placement, Bamboo Palm maintains its soft shape and remains a reliable indoor plant that complements a wide range of interiors.

Medium Bamboo Palm Care Guide

Water logo

Watering – How often should it be watered?

Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top 3–5cm of soil begins to dry out. It prefers a steady routine rather than extremes, so avoid letting it dry out completely or sit in water.

Light logo

Light – What light does Bamboo Palm need?

Bright, indirect light works best, but Bamboo Palm adapts well to medium and lower light conditions. In brighter light, it produces stronger and more consistent growth. Avoid harsh direct sun, as it can dry out and damage the fronds.

Humidity logo

Humidity – Does it need extra humidity?

Average indoor humidity is usually sufficient. Slightly higher humidity helps keep the fronds looking fresh, especially in drier environments.

Soil Logo

Soil – What soil works best?

Use a moisture-retentive but well-draining mix. Indoor Potting Soil works well as a base. Improve airflow and drainage by incorporating Perlite and Bark Chips.

Fertilizing logo

Feeding – How should it be fertilised?

Feed during the growing season with Grobest Organic Fertiliser every 4–6 weeks. For stronger growth, Novatec Soluble Fertiliser can be used with each watering.

Repotting logi

Repotting – When should it be repotted?

Repot every 18–24 months or when the plant becomes root-bound. Move up one pot size only. When repotting, incorporate TerraPlus Natura N and Controlled Release Fertiliser into fresh mix.

Pest image

Pests – What pests should I watch for?

Spider mites can appear, especially in dry conditions. Regular inspection and early treatment with an insecticidal spray will prevent problems.

Temerature image

Temperature – What temperature suits it best?

Bamboo Palm grows well between 18°C and 28°C. Avoid temperatures below 12°C and protect it from cold drafts.
