Commonly known as: Silver Sword Philodendron
Botanical name: Philodendron hastatum
Philodendron Silver Sword is valued for its clean lines and distinctive silver-blue foliage. The elongated, pointed leaves have a subtle metallic sheen that becomes more pronounced as the plant matures. When grown in good light, the foliage develops a stronger shape and thicker texture, giving the plant a bold but refined presence.
In a 25cm pot, Silver Sword quickly establishes itself as a substantial indoor plant. The leaves on these plants are already sizing up nicely, indicating healthy growth and good root development. While often sold young, this variety becomes increasingly impressive with time, especially when given stable conditions and space to grow.
Silver Sword can grow in a more upright, climbing form as it matures, but even without support it maintains a structured look. It suits modern interiors well and pairs easily with other foliage plants without competing visually.
Philodendron Silver Sword Care Guide
Humidity – Does it need extra humidity?
Average indoor humidity is generally sufficient. Higher humidity can encourage larger leaves and smoother leaf edges but is not essential.
Light – What light does Philodendron Silver Sword need?
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Good light supports stronger leaf size and enhances the silver colouring. It can tolerate medium light, but growth may slow and leaves may appear darker.
Humidity – Does it need high humidity?
Yes — humidity keeps the fronds lush and soft. Bathrooms are ideal, but in drier rooms, mist daily or use a pebble tray with water beneath the pot.
Soil – What soil works best?
As a true aroid, Silver Sword performs best in a chunky, free-draining mix. Our premixed Aroid Mix is ideal. Alternatively, use Indoor Potting Soil as a base and amend with Perlite and Bark Chips to improve airflow and root health.
Feeding – How should it be fertilised?
Feed during spring and summer using Grobest Organic Fertiliser every 4–6 weeks. For faster growth and increased leaf size, Novatec can be used occasionally at a reduced strength.
Repotting – When should it be repotted?
Repot every 18–24 months, or once roots begin filling the pot. Move up one pot size only. Controlled Release Fertiliser and TerraPlus Natura N can be added to the fresh mix during repotting.
Pests – What pests should I watch for?
Check regularly for thrips, spider mites, and mealybugs, especially on new growth. Early treatment with an insecticidal spray prevents escalation.
Temperature – What temperature suits it best?
Best grown between 18°C and 28°C. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 12°C.
