Philodendron Florida Green

R390.00

Philodendron Florida Green is a climbing aroid with glossy green, deeply lobed leaves that become increasingly sculptural as the plant matures.

These plants come in 14cm pots and stand approximately 30–40cm tall. Position yours within 1m of your brightest north-facing window, using a sheer curtain to keep direct sun off the foliage, and add a support as it grows.

Commonly known as: Philodendron Florida Green,

Botanical name: Philodendron ‘Florida’

Philodendron Florida Green is all about leaf shape. Its glossy green foliage develops pronounced lobes, giving each leaf a sculpted outline that stands out against simpler foliage.

These plants are supplied in 14cm pots and stand approximately 30–40cm tall. They are a manageable size for a plant stand or a growing collection, with room to develop into taller specimens as their climbing stems extend.

Florida Green is a cultivated climbing philodendron. Young foliage can look quite different from the larger leaves of a mature, well-supported plant, so part of the enjoyment is watching its shape develop with successive growth.

A moss pole or other suitable support gives the stem somewhere to climb and helps keep the plant upright. Attach the main stem loosely, allowing the leaf stalks to move freely, and leave space for new growth at the top.

The green foliage pairs easily with colourful aroids or other sculptural plants. Give it a free-draining root zone, warmth and consistent care, and it can become an engaging feature as it climbs.

Philodendron Florida Green Care Guide

Water logo

Water – When should I water Florida Green?

Check the top 2–3cm of the potting mix. When this layer feels dry, water thoroughly until excess runs from the drainage holes, then empty the saucer or decorative outer pot.

Let the mix dry slightly between waterings without repeatedly drying the entire rootball. A 14cm pot may dry quickly in warm conditions, so check it rather than relying on a weekly routine.

Light logo

Light – Where should I place my Florida Green?

In a South African home  – choose a position within 1m of your brightest north-facing window. Keep direct sun off the leaves; use a sheer curtain between the window and plant when sunbeams enter.

A large east-facing window with the direct morning rays screened is another option. Keep it close to the glass rather than in a dim room corner. Long gaps between leaves and smaller new foliage can indicate that it needs more usable daylight.

Humidity logo

Humidity – Does Florida Green need extra humidity?

Typical household humidity can work, though moderately humid air supports comfortable growth. Keep it away from drying heater or air-conditioner blasts.

If the room is unusually dry, consider a humidifier while maintaining airflow. Avoid keeping unfolding leaves constantly wet.

Soil Logo

Soil – What mix should I use for Florida Green?

I recommend Milled Bark Growing Medium as the growing medium for an airy, freely draining root zone.

Keep the mix loose around the roots and let the upper layer dry slightly between waterings. Use a pot with drainage holes.

Fertilizing logo

Feeding – How should I fertilise Florida Green?

I recommend Novatec Soluble Fertilizer, a high-nitrogen fertiliser that supports leafy growth.

For organic feeding, choose TerraPlus Natura N or Grobest Organic Fertilizer. Controlled Release Fertilizer is another option for a gradual nutrient supply.

Feed during active spring and summer growth and reduce feeding when growth slows. Follow the chosen product’s label rate and application method. Apply soluble feed to a moist rootball, and avoid combining several products at full rates.

Repotting logi

Repotting – When does Florida Green need a larger pot?

Repot when the roots have filled the pot or water management becomes difficult because the plant is heavily rootbound. Spring is a good time.

Choose a pot only slightly larger, with drainage holes, and refresh the mix around the roots. Fit a climbing support at the same time to minimise later disturbance.

Pest image

Pests – What should I look out for?

Inspect leaf undersides and stem joints for mealybugs, scale, thrips or spider mites. Isolate affected plants promptly and choose a treatment labelled for the pest and ornamental foliage.

Wipe dust from mature leaves with a soft damp cloth so you can spot problems early. Test treatments on a small area first.

Temerature image

Temperature – How warm should I keep Florida Green?

Normal warm room temperatures suit it well. Aim to keep it above about 15°C, away from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.

Protect it from frost. If growing on a sheltered patio, bring it indoors before cold nights arrive.

Extra Care – Give the climbing stem support

Guide the main stem onto a moss pole or other support with loose plant ties. Avoid fastening the leaf stalks tightly. Wipe mature leaves gently and give new leaves time to unfold on their own.

FAQs

How big are these plants?
They come in 14cm pots and stand approximately 30–40cm tall. Individual plants vary naturally.

Will Florida Green stay compact?
It is a climber and will extend as it grows. A support helps manage its shape and shows off the foliage.

Why do newer leaves look different?
Leaf shape changes with maturity and growing conditions. Well-supported plants with enough light can develop larger, more distinctly lobed foliage.

Can I propagate it from a leaf?
A stem cutting must include a node, where a leaf and potential roots emerge. A leaf stalk alone will not produce a new climbing plant.

Is it suitable around pets?
Keep it out of reach of pets and children who may chew the leaves. Philodendron tissue is irritating if eaten, and its sap can irritate skin.
