Commonly known as: String of Hearts
Botanical name: Ceropegia woodii
String of Hearts is known for its fine trailing growth and distinctive heart-shaped leaves. The thin vines extend quickly and create a soft cascading effect, while the small patterned leaves add detail without making the plant feel heavy.
The foliage shows a mix of green and silver tones on the surface, with a subtle purple underside. As the plant matures, the vines can grow quite long, making it ideal for hanging pots or elevated shelves where the trailing stems can fall naturally.
In a 12cm pot, these plants are already established and ready to start extending. With good light and careful watering, they maintain a light, balanced look rather than becoming sparse. The plant also forms small tubers along the vines and in the soil, which help store water and support ongoing growth.
This is a plant that responds well to a slightly hands-off approach. When placed in the right light and not overwatered, it continues to produce steady trailing growth with minimal intervention.
String of Hearts Care Guide
Watering – How often should it be watered?
Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. String of Hearts stores water in its leaves and tubers, so it handles dry periods well. In most cases, watering every 2–3 weeks is sufficient, depending on conditions. Always check the soil first before watering.
Light – What light does String of Hearts need?
Bright, indirect light is ideal. It can handle some gentle direct morning sun, which often helps maintain stronger leaf colour and compact growth. In lower light, the vines may stretch and the leaves may space out more.
Humidity – Does it need extra humidity?
No. Normal indoor humidity is more than enough. This plant handles dry air well and does not require misting.
Soil – What soil works best?
Use a well-draining mix that prevents excess moisture retention. Indoor Potting Soil works well as a base. Improve drainage by adding Perlite and Bark Chips to keep the mix open and breathable.
Feeding – How should it be fertilised?
Feed lightly during the growing season with Grobest Organic Fertiliser every 6–8 weeks. If slightly faster growth is desired, Novatec Soluble Fertiliser can be used occasionally at reduced strength.
Repotting – When should it be repotted?
Repot every 1–2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Move up one size only. When repotting, incorporate TerraPlus Natura N and Controlled Release Fertiliser into fresh mix.
Pests – What pests should I watch for?
Check occasionally for aphids or mealybugs along the vines. Treat early if needed to prevent spread.
Temperature – What temperature suits it best?
String of Hearts grows well between 18°C and 28°C. Avoid temperatures below 10°C and protect it from cold drafts.
