Commonly known as: Syngonium Carti Road | Llano-Carti Road Syngonium
Botanical name: Syngonium erythrophyllum ‘Llano-Carti Road’
Syngonium Carti Road offers a rich, dark foliage colour with an extra surprise when the leaves turn: red to burgundy undersides contrast with the deep green upper surfaces. That two-tone effect makes it especially attractive where the stems can spill over the edge of a pot.
Supplied in a 14cm pot, it is a useful addition to a shelf, plant stand or growing aroid collection. Individual plants vary naturally in leaf size, shape and colour intensity.
Often sold under the fuller name Syngonium erythrophyllum ‘Llano-Carti Road’, it develops vining stems. Let these trail for a relaxed display, or guide them onto a small support for a more upright arrangement.
Its dark leaves still need plenty of usable daylight. Start within 1m of a bright north-facing window, with a sheer curtain between the plant and any direct sun. Positioning it high on a shelf only works if the foliage can still see the window clearly.
Consistent watering, an airy potting mix and a warm spot suit its tropical nature. As the stems extend, occasional trimming can help manage the shape, while rooted node cuttings offer a way to grow additional plants.
Syngonium Carti Road Care Guide
Water – When should I water Carti Road?
Allow the top 1–2cm of mix to dry slightly, then water thoroughly and let the pot drain. Empty the saucer or decorative outer pot afterwards.
Keep some moisture around the roots without leaving the mix soggy or repeatedly drying it right through. Check more often in warm weather, and reduce watering as the pot dries more slowly in winter.
Light – Where should I place my Carti Road?
Choose a position within 1m of your brightest north-facing window. Keep direct sun off the leaves; use a sheer curtain between the window and plant when sunbeams enter.
A large east-facing window with the direct morning rays screened is another option. Keep it close to the glass rather than in a dim room corner. Long gaps between leaves and smaller new foliage can indicate that it needs more usable daylight.
Humidity – Does Carti Road need extra humidity?
Typical household humidity can work, though moderately humid air supports comfortable growth. Keep it away from drying heater or air-conditioner blasts.
If the room is unusually dry, consider a humidifier while maintaining airflow. Avoid keeping unfolding leaves constantly wet.
Soil – What mix should I use for Carti Road?
I recommend Milled Bark Growing Medium as the growing medium for an airy, freely draining root zone.
Let the surface dry slightly between waterings while maintaining some moisture below. Use drainage holes and avoid a compacted, soggy root zone.
Feeding – How should I fertilise Carti Road?
I recommend Novatec Soluble Fertilizer, a high-nitrogen fertiliser that supports leafy growth.
For organic feeding, choose TerraPlus Natura N or Grobest Organic Fertilizer. Controlled Release Fertilizer is another option for a gradual nutrient supply.
Feed during active growth and reduce feeding in cooler conditions when growth slows. Follow the chosen product’s label rate and application method. Apply soluble feed to a moist rootball, and avoid combining several products at full rates.
Repotting – When should I repot Carti Road?
Move it up one pot size when the roots have filled the current container. Use fresh, airy mix and drainage holes rather than a large pot that stays wet for long periods.
Spring is a useful time. If you want an upright display, fit a support while repotting so the roots are disturbed only once.
Pests – What should I look out for?
Inspect leaf undersides and stem joints for mealybugs, scale, thrips or spider mites. Isolate affected plants promptly and choose a treatment labelled for the pest and ornamental foliage. Wipe dust from mature leaves with a soft damp cloth so you can spot problems early. Test treatments on a small area first.
Temperature – How warm should I keep Carti Road?
Normal warm room temperatures suit it well. Aim to keep it above about 15°C, away from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.
Protect it from frost. If growing on a sheltered patio, bring it indoors before cold nights arrive.
Extra Care – Choose a trailing or climbing display
Let the stems spill over a pot edge or train them onto a support with loose ties. Trim an overlong vine just above a node to manage its shape, using clean tools and gloves.
FAQs
What size pot is supplied?
These plants come in 14cm pots. Leaf size and stem length vary between individual plants.
Does it need a moss pole?
A support is optional for a trailing display. Use one if you prefer the stems to grow upwards.
Are the burgundy undersides normal?
Yes. The contrasting reverse is one of its appealing features, and colour intensity varies with leaf age and growing conditions.
Can I propagate the vines?
Use a stem cutting with a healthy node. A leaf and leaf stalk alone will not produce a complete new vine.
Is Carti Road pet-safe?
Keep it away from pets and children who may chew the leaves. Like other Syngoniums, it contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals.
