Name

Commonly known as: XL Heartleaf Philodendron

Botanical name: Philodendron hederaceum

XL Heartleaf Philodendron takes a familiar plant and elevates it into something far more substantial. Instead of a single trailing vine, this version is grown with multiple plants trained up a moss pole, creating a thick, layered column of foliage.

At around 1.2m tall, it already has height, but what sets it apart is the density. The leaves overlap and fill in the pole, which gives the plant a full, established look from the start. The classic heart-shaped leaves remain soft and slightly glossy, adding a natural, relaxed feel while still maintaining structure.

The moss pole encourages upward growth, allowing the plant to climb rather than trail loosely. This keeps the shape controlled and vertical, making it ideal for filling space without spreading out too wide.

Because there are multiple plants working together, the overall effect is far more lush than a standard single-stem plant. Over time, new growth continues to climb and fill in any gaps, making the plant even denser.

This is a plant that delivers immediate impact. It works well in corners, next to furniture, or anywhere you want to introduce height and greenery without needing multiple smaller plants.

XL Heartleaf Philodendron Care Guide

Water logo

Watering – How often should it be watered?

Water when the top 3–5cm of soil begins to dry out. Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Because of the moss pole, ensure both the soil and the pole receive moisture during watering.

Light logo

Light – What light does XL Heartleaf Philodendron need?

Bright, indirect light works best. It adapts well to medium and lower light conditions, but brighter light encourages fuller growth and stronger climbing. Avoid harsh direct sun.

Humidity logo

Humidity – Does it need extra humidity?

Average indoor humidity is suitable. Moderate humidity supports stronger leaf development and helps the plant climb more effectively.

Soil Logo

Soil – What soil works best?

Use a well-draining, airy mix. Aroid Mix works particularly well to support root health and airflow. Alternatively, use Indoor Potting Soil with Perlite and Bark Chips.

Fertilizing logo

Feeding – How should it be fertilised?

Feed during the growing season with Grobest Organic Fertiliser every 4–6 weeks. For stronger growth and faster filling of the pole, Novatec Soluble Fertiliser can be used.

Repotting logi

Repotting – When should it be repotted?

Repot every 12–18 months or when the roots fill the pot. Move up one size only. When repotting, incorporate TerraPlus Natura N and Controlled Release Fertiliser into fresh mix.

Pest image

Pests – What pests should I watch for?

Watch for aphids and spider mites, especially on new growth. Treat early with an insecticidal spray if needed.

Temerature image

Temperature – What temperature suits it best?

Heartleaf Philodendron grows well between 18°C and 28°C. Avoid temperatures below 12°C and protect from cold drafts.
