Commonly known as: ZZ Raven
Botanical name: Zamioculcas zamiifolia ‘Raven’
The ZZ Raven (Zamioculcas zamiifolia ‘Raven’) is a modern cultivar of the classic ZZ Plant, recognised for its dramatic dark foliage and exceptional tolerance of indoor conditions. New growth emerges bright green before gradually deepening to a rich purple-black, creating natural contrast across the plant.
Like all ZZ Plants, Raven stores water in its thick stems and underground rhizomes. This allows it to cope well with irregular watering and lower light levels, making it a reliable option for homes and offices where plant care may not always be top of mind.
Slow-growing and naturally upright, ZZ Raven keeps a neat shape without pruning and adapts well to stable indoor environments. It’s particularly well suited to shaded rooms, corners, and spaces where many other plants would struggle.
ZZ Raven Care Guide
Watering – How often should I water it?
Allow the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings. ZZ Raven is drought-tolerant and far more likely to suffer from overwatering than underwatering. Always let excess water drain away fully.
Light – What light does a ZZ Raven need?
ZZ Raven adapts well to a wide range of light conditions, from low light to bright, indirect light. While it tolerates shade better than most plants, brighter indirect light will encourage stronger growth and more even colour.
Humidity – Does it need humidity?
No special humidity is required. ZZ Raven performs well in average indoor humidity and does not need misting.
Soil – What soil works best?
A free-draining mix is essential to prevent rot. Indoor Potting Soil provides a stable base that drains well while still supporting root health.
Feeding – How should I fertilise it?
Feed lightly during spring and summer using a diluted dose of Grobest Organic Fertiliser every 6–8 weeks. ZZ Plants have low nutrient needs, so less is more.
Repotting – When should ZZ Raven be repotted?
Repot only when the plant becomes clearly root-bound, usually every 2–3 years. Move up one pot size at a time and retain most of the existing soil around the roots. When repotting, you can mix TerraPlus Natura N and Controlled Release Fertiliser into the fresh mix.
Pests – What pests should I watch for?
ZZ Raven is very pest-resistant. Occasionally, scale insects may appear on stressed plants. Regular checks and early treatment with an insecticidal spray are usually sufficient.
Temperature – What temperature suits it best?
Ideal temperatures range between 18 °C and 30 °C. Avoid prolonged exposure to cold drafts or temperatures below 12 °C.
