The ZZ Plant is one of the easiest indoor plants to live with, known for its upright stems and glossy green leaves. It’s a solid choice for beginners or anyone wanting a plant that doesn’t need much attention and copes well with less-than-perfect conditions. These plants are grown in 15 cm pots, making them easy to place on floors, shelves, or in offices where light and watering aren’t always consistent.

Name

Commonly known as: ZZ Plant

Botanical name: Zamioculcas zamiifolia

The ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is widely regarded as one of the most reliable indoor plants available. Its thick stems and waxy leaves aren’t just for looks — they store water, allowing the plant to cope with missed waterings and low light far better than most houseplants.

This standard green form has a clean, architectural shape that suits a wide range of interiors. It grows slowly, keeps itself neat, and doesn’t require regular pruning. Because it prefers stability over fussing, the ZZ Plant often performs best when it’s left alone in a consistent spot.

If you’re after a plant that quietly gets on with the job and still looks good doing it, the ZZ Plant is hard to beat.

ZZ Plant Care Guide

Water logo

Watering – How often should I water it?

Allow the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings. ZZ Plants are drought-tolerant and much more likely to suffer from overwatering than underwatering. Always ensure excess water drains away fully.

Light logo

Light – What light does a ZZ Plant need?

ZZ Plants adapt well to a wide range of light levels, from low light to bright, indirect light. While brighter light encourages slightly faster growth, the plant remains healthy even in shaded indoor spaces.

Humidity logo

Humidity – Does it need humidity?

No. ZZ Plants handle average indoor humidity without issue and do not require misting.

Soil Logo

Soil – What soil works best?

A free-draining mix is essential to prevent root rot. Indoor Potting Soil provides a stable, bark-based foundation that supports healthy roots without staying wet for too long.

Fertilizing logo

Feeding – How should I fertilise it?

Feed lightly during spring and summer using a diluted dose of Grobest Organic Fertiliser every 6–8 weeks. ZZ Plants have low nutrient requirements, so gentle feeding is more than enough.

Repotting logi

Repotting – When should it be repotted?

Repot only when the plant becomes clearly root-bound, usually every 2–3 years. Move up one pot size at a time and keep most of the existing soil around the roots intact. When repotting, you can mix TerraPlus Natura N and Controlled Release Fertiliser into the fresh potting mix for long-term nutrition.

Pest image

Pests – What pests should I watch for?

ZZ Plants are very pest-resistant. Occasionally, scale insects may appear on stressed plants. Regular inspection and early treatment with an insecticidal spray usually resolves any issues quickly.

Temerature image

Temperature – What temperature suits it best?

Ideal temperatures range between 18 °C and 30 °C. Protect the plant from cold drafts and avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures below 12 °C.
