Name

Commonly known as: Dioscorea Discolor | Variegated Yam Vine

Botanical name: Dioscorea discolor

Dioscorea discolor is grown primarily for its dramatic foliage. The leaves display a distinctive pattern of silver and green across the upper surface, while the undersides often show deep purple tones. This strong contrast gives the plant a lively appearance even when viewed from a distance.

Unlike many upright houseplants, this species grows as a climbing or trailing vine. As the stems lengthen, the plant benefits from support such as a small trellis or moss pole. When allowed to trail, the stems can cascade over shelves or hanging pots, creating a softer look.

In a 14cm pot, these plants are well established and ready to start extending new vines. With stable light and consistent watering, Dioscorea discolor grows quickly and continues producing fresh foliage. Its patterned leaves add movement and texture to a collection without requiring complicated care.

Dioscorea Discolor Care Guide

Water logo

Watering – How often should it be watered?

Water when the top 2–4cm of soil begins to dry out. Dioscorea discolor prefers slightly consistent moisture but should never sit in water. Always allow excess water to drain completely before placing the pot back in its tray or saucer.

Light logo

Light – What light does Dioscorea Discolor need?

Bright, indirect light works best. Good light helps maintain the contrast between the silver and green patterns on the leaves. Avoid strong direct sun, which can scorch the foliage.

Humidity logo

Humidity – Does it need extra humidity?

Average indoor humidity works well, although moderate humidity can support stronger growth. If the air is extremely dry, leaf edges may crisp slightly.

Soil Logo

Soil – What soil works best?

Use a well-draining mix that holds some moisture while allowing air to reach the roots. Indoor Potting Soil works well as a base. Improve drainage and structure by adding Perlite and Bark Chips.

Fertilizing logo

Feeding – How should it be fertilised?

Feed during spring and summer when the plant is actively growing. Grobest Organic Fertiliser every 4–6 weeks supports steady vine growth. If you want slightly stronger growth, Novatec Soluble Fertiliser can be used occasionally at reduced strength.

Repotting logi

Repotting – When should it be repotted?

Repot once the roots begin filling the pot or when growth slows due to limited space. Move up one size only. When repotting, incorporate TerraPlus Natura N and Controlled Release Fertiliser into fresh mix.

Pest image

Pests – What pests should I watch for?

Spider mites and aphids can occasionally appear on new growth. Regular inspection and early treatment with an insecticidal spray usually prevents problems.

Temerature image

Temperature – What temperature suits it best?

Dioscorea discolor grows well between 18°C and 28°C. These plants do go dormant in winter and then start to growing prolifically in Spring.  Avoid temperatures below 12°C and protect the plant from cold drafts.
