Name

Commonly known as: Hoya Krimson Princess | Wax Plant

Botanical name: Hoya carnosa ‘Krimson Princess’

Hoya Krimson Princess is known for its distinctive variegation and steady growth habit. The leaves show a mix of green centres with creamy edges, often flushed with soft pink on new growth. This colour combination gives the plant a lighter, more layered look compared to solid green varieties.

The plant grows as a trailing or climbing vine. In a 14cm pot, it is already established and ready to extend new growth. Over time, the stems can be trained to climb or allowed to cascade naturally from shelves or hanging pots. The leaves remain firm and slightly waxy, which helps the plant retain moisture and tolerate periods of neglect.

With consistent light and controlled watering, Hoya Krimson Princess develops into a fuller plant with multiple stems. Mature plants may also produce clusters of star-shaped flowers under the right conditions, adding another level of interest.

Hoya Krimson Princess Care Guide

Water logo

Watering – How often should it be watered?

Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Hoyas prefer to dry slightly rather than stay constantly wet. In most indoor conditions, watering every 1–2 weeks works well, but always check the soil first. Overwatering is the most common issue.

Light logo

Light – What light does Hoya Krimson Princess need?

Bright, indirect light works best. Good light helps maintain the cream and pink variegation and encourages stronger growth. Some gentle morning sun is usually beneficial, but avoid harsh afternoon sun.

Humidity logo

Humidity – Does it need extra humidity?

Average indoor humidity is sufficient. While it can handle drier air, moderate humidity can support better growth and flowering over time.

Soil Logo

Soil – What soil works best?

Use a well-draining, breathable mix. Indoor Potting Soil works well as a base. Improve airflow and drainage by adding Perlite and Bark Chips to keep the mix open.

Fertilizing logo

Feeding – How should it be fertilised?

Feed during the growing season with Grobest Organic Fertiliser every 4–6 weeks. For stronger growth and potential flowering, Novatec Soluble Fertiliser can be used to boost growth as it is a high nitrogen fertilizer.

Repotting logi

Repotting – When should it be repotted?

Hoyas prefer to be slightly root-bound, so repot every 2–3 years or when necessary. Move up one pot size only. When repotting, incorporate TerraPlus Natura N and Controlled Release Fertiliser into the fresh mix.

Pest image

Pests – What pests should I watch for?

Watch for mealybugs and aphids along stems and leaf joints. Early treatment with an insecticidal spray keeps infestations under control.

Temerature image

Temperature – What temperature suits it best?

Hoya Krimson Princess grows well between 18°C and 28°C. Avoid temperatures below 12°C and protect it from cold drafts.

FAQ’s

Will the pink colour stay?
Yes, especially on new growth in bright light. Older leaves may show more green and cream.

Can it flower indoors?
Yes. Mature plants can produce clusters of star-shaped flowers under stable conditions.

Should I cut the long vines?
You can, but leaving them encourages flowering. Pruning helps make the plant fuller.

Is it pet-safe?
Yes. Hoyas are generally considered non-toxic to pets.
