The Premium XL Bamboo Palm is quite different from simply buying a taller Bamboo Palm. The grower uses a much higher number of seedlings in each 30cm pot, creating considerably more stems from the base and a much denser canopy of foliage.
The result is an exceptionally full plant standing approximately 1.5–1.6m tall. While our XXL and XXXL Bamboo Palms are taller, the Premium XL is all about density and volume.
That distinction is important. Bamboo Palms are naturally clumping palms, so the number of established canes in the pot has an enormous effect on how substantial the finished plant looks. More canes mean more growing points, more fronds and a much fuller plant from top to bottom.
It’s also one of the easiest large palms to grow indoors.
Unlike palms that demand direct sun, Bamboo Palms grow naturally beneath taller vegetation and adapt extremely well to bright indoor conditions. Give them plenty of natural light, consistent watering and regular fertiliser and they’ll continue producing fresh canes and new fronds from the base.
Water is particularly important. Chamaedorea seifrizii naturally occurs in moist environments and appreciates a thorough drink. Don’t repeatedly allow a large plant like this to become completely dry. Water deeply, allow the excess to drain and keep the root ball evenly moist rather than constantly saturated.
Regular feeding also makes a big difference. You’re maintaining a 30cm pot packed with individual palms, so there’s considerable competition for nutrients. Consistent fertilising helps maintain rich green foliage and supports the steady production of new growth.
For a bright lounge, entrance, office or large room where you want a substantial amount of greenery from a single pot, the Premium XL Bamboo Palm is difficult to beat.

Premium XL Bamboo Palm Care Guide
Watering – How often should I water it?
Keep the growing medium evenly moist without leaving it permanently waterlogged. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain freely. With such a dense 30cm root ball, check below the surface before watering rather than judging moisture from the top layer alone.
Should I occasionally flush the pot?
Yes. Bamboo Palms respond very well to a thorough flush. Every month or so, take the plant outside or into a shower and run plenty of water through the growing medium. This thoroughly wets the entire root ball and helps flush accumulated fertiliser salts from the pot.
Light – How much light does a Premium XL Bamboo Palm need?
Bright, indirect natural light is best. Gentle morning sun is also beneficial. Bamboo Palms tolerate medium light better than many large indoor plants, but don’t mistake that for no light. A bright position will produce much stronger growth and help the plant maintain its dense foliage.
Humidity – Does a Bamboo Palm need high humidity?
It appreciates good humidity, particularly during hot, dry weather, but normal household conditions are generally manageable. Keeping it away from heaters and very dry air will help maintain the foliage. Good airflow is equally important.
Soil – What growing medium should I use?
Use a growing medium that retains consistent moisture while still allowing oxygen around the roots. I recommend Milled Bark Growing Medium. Some Perlite can be incorporated to maintain good drainage.
Feeding – Does the Premium XL Bamboo Palm need regular fertiliser?
Definitely. Remember that this isn’t one plant growing in the pot – it’s a dense planting containing many individual stems. Regular nutrition is important. Controlled Release Fertiliser provides a balanced, convenient feed consistently over time. You can also use Grobest Organic Fertiliser regularly, while Novatec Soluble Fertiliser is an excellent option to push strong, active growth.
Leaf Care – Should I clean the foliage?
Yes. A plant this full has a huge number of leaves collecting dust. If possible, take it outside and hose the entire plant down regularly during warm weather. This cleans the foliage and also helps with pest management.
Repotting – When should I repot it?
Don’t rush. Bamboo Palms cope well with being reasonably snug in their containers. Once the roots have thoroughly filled the 30cm pot, move up by one pot size during the warmer growing months rather than putting it straight into a substantially larger container.
Pruning – Can I remove old stems and leaves?
Yes. Individual older fronds will eventually age and can be removed at their base. If an entire cane has finished, it can also be cut close to soil level. New growth will continue emerging from the established clump.
Pests – What should I look out for?
Spider mites and scale are the main pests worth watching for, particularly within such dense foliage. Check the undersides of the fronds and along the canes regularly. Good airflow and occasionally hosing the plant down make pest management considerably easier.
Temperature – What temperatures does it prefer?
Bamboo Palms prefer warm conditions around 18°C–28°C. Protect them from frost and very cold winter conditions. During colder weather, water in the morning so excess moisture has time to drain before temperatures fall overnight.
