Important to note – this plant does not require any repotting for at least another year. This plant has been grown in it’s potting mix for the last 7-8 months and is very happy where it is. Changing it’s potting mix will be absolutely detrimental and will cause it drop off roots which would lead to root rot. Do not repot for at least another 12 months.

Name

Commonly known as: Variegated Monstera Simon

Variegated Monsteras are slow-growing, sensitive plants that reward patience far more than intervention. This specimen has been grown and established in its current potting mix for the past 7–8 months, allowing its root system to stabilise and adapt fully to its environment.

Unlike standard green Monsteras, variegated forms rely on a reduced amount of chlorophyll. This means they grow more slowly, react more strongly to stress, and take longer to recover from root disturbance. For this reason, stability is far more important than size or speed of growth.

This plant is currently exactly where it needs to be. The pot size, soil structure, and root environment are working together, and disrupting that balance too early is one of the most common causes of decline in variegated Monsteras. With correct light, careful watering, and patience, this plant will continue to develop strong leaves and healthy aerial roots without any need for immediate changes.

Variegated Monstera Simon Care Guide

Water logo

Watering – How often should I water it?

Water only once the top few centimetres of soil have dried out. Variegated Monsteras prefer a careful watering routine rather than frequent watering. Overwatering is far more damaging than slight dryness.

Light logo

Light – What light does a Variegated Monstera need?

Bright, indirect light is essential. Variegated leaves contain less chlorophyll, so good light helps support healthy growth and maintain colour. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the lighter sections of the leaves.

Humidity logo

Humidity – Does it need higher humidity?

Moderate to higher humidity is beneficial, especially for leaf health and aerial root development. Normal indoor humidity is usually sufficient, but avoid placing the plant near heaters or air conditioners.

Soil Logo

Soil – What soil does it need?

The current potting mix is already well suited to this plant and should not be changed. The existing mix has supported root establishment and should remain undisturbed until the plant clearly outgrows its pot.

Fertilizing logo

Feeding – How should I fertilise it?

Feed lightly during spring and summer using a diluted dose of Grobest Organic Fertiliser every 4–6 weeks. Avoid overfeeding, as excess nutrients can stress variegated plants.

Repotting logi

Repotting – When and how should it be repotted?

This plant must not be repotted for at least another 12 months. When the time eventually comes, the main root system should not be disturbed. Carry over most of the existing potting soil into the new, slightly larger pot, and gently backfill around it with fresh mix. This allows the roots to slowly adapt to the new environment. Completely changing the soil or breaking up the root ball will cause root loss and can lead to root rot.

Pest image

Pests – What should I watch for?

Watch for common indoor pests such as spider mites and mealybugs, especially on the undersides of leaves. Regular inspection and early treatment with an insecticidal spray will prevent problems from escalating.

Temerature image

Temperature – What temperature suits it best?

Ideal temperatures range between 18 °C and 28 °C. Keep the plant away from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes, which can stress both roots and foliage.

FAQ’s

Q: Why shouldn’t I repot this plant yet?
Because the root system is established and stable. Disturbing it too early can cause root drop and rot.

Q: Can I refresh the soil slightly?
No. Even partial soil replacement can stress the roots. Wait until the plant clearly needs more space.

Q: Will it grow faster if I repot it?
No. Variegated Monsteras grow slowly by nature. Stability supports better long-term growth than frequent changes.

Q: Is variegation guaranteed on new leaves?
Variegation patterns vary naturally. Proper light helps maintain healthy, balanced variegation.
