Commonly known as: Cretan Brake Fern
Botanical name: Pteris Albolineata
The fern is the no-nonsense cousin in the fern family. Where as some ferns sulk if you miss one watering, the Cretan Brake shrugs it off and keeps on growing. With its fine, divided fronds and compact shape, it’s a fern that looks refined but doesn’t demand too much in return.
Cretan Brake Fern Care Guide
☀️ Light: Give it a spot with bright, indirect light, and it’ll thrive. A bit of morning sun won’t hurt, but keep it out of the harsh midday rays. In shadier corners, it’ll grow slower but stay healthy.
💧 Watering: Like most ferns, it enjoys moisture. Let the top centimetre of soil dry before watering again, and keep it evenly damp. It’s more forgiving than delicate ferns, which makes it a brilliant choice for busy homes.
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity: Anywhere between 18–26°C is perfect. It enjoys moderate humidity but won’t sulk in average home conditions. If you want to spoil it, misting the fronds helps them stay lush.
🪴 Soil & Repotting: Give it a mix that drains freely but still holds moisture. Our Aroid Mix works perfectly, or mix Barks Unlimited Potting Soil with Perlite. Add Bark Chips to keep it airy. Repot every 2–3 years.
🍃 Fertiliser: It’s not fussy, but regular feeding makes a difference. Use Controlled Release Fertiliser every few months and top up with Organic Fertiliser during growth.
🐛 Pests: Hardy by nature, but if stressed, it may pick up mealybugs. A quick spray sorts them out.
If you want a fern that gives you beauty without the high-maintenance attitude, the Cretan Brake Fern is your go-to.
