Name

Commonly known as: XL Monstera Adansonii | Swiss Cheese Plant

Botanical name: Monstera adansonii

XL Monstera Adansonii offers height, texture and movement in one plant. The elongated green leaves develop natural fenestrations (holes) as they mature, giving the plant its well-known “Swiss cheese” appearance. In this size, multiple plants grow together in a 30cm pot, which creates a fuller and more established look from day one.

At approximately 1.3m tall, this is no longer a small trailing plant. It already shows vertical structure and benefits from support to maintain upward growth. The layered foliage adds depth without becoming heavy, making it suitable for living rooms, offices or large open areas.

When given stable light and consistent care, Monstera adansonii grows steadily and produces increasingly dramatic leaves. It responds well to routine feeding and proper drainage. Over time, it can continue climbing and expanding, creating a beautiful tropical look without being difficult to manage.

XL Monstera Adansonii Care Guide

Water logo

Watering – How often should it be watered?

Water when the top 3–5cm of soil has dried out. Monsteras prefer evenly moist soil, but they do not tolerate sitting in water. Let excess water drain fully before returning it to its saucer. With a large 30cm pot, always check moisture properly rather than watering on a strict schedule. Overwatering is far more damaging than allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings.

Light logo

Light – What light does XL Monstera Adansonii need?

Bright, indirect light is ideal. The more consistent the light, the better the leaf development and fenestration. While it can tolerate medium light, lower light often results in smaller leaves with fewer holes. Avoid harsh direct sun, especially during the afternoon, as it can burn the foliage. A position near a bright window with filtered light works well.

Humidity logo

Humidity – Does it need extra humidity?

Average indoor humidity is usually sufficient, but moderate humidity supports larger leaves and smoother growth. If the air is very dry, especially in winter, leaf edges may crisp slightly. Grouping plants together or placing it in a naturally humid room can help.

Soil Logo

Soil – What soil works best?

Monstera adansonii benefits from a chunky, airy mix that allows oxygen to reach the roots. Aroid Mix works particularly well because it balances drainage and moisture retention. Alternatively, use Indoor Potting Soil and improve structure with Perlite and Bark Chips to keep the mix open and breathable.

Fertilizing logo

Feeding – How should it be fertilised?

Feed during spring and summer when the plant is actively growing. Grobest Organic Fertiliser every 4–6 weeks supports steady growth and healthy leaf colour. If you want to encourage stronger seasonal growth, Novatec Soluble Fertiliser can be used. Avoid overfeeding in winter.

Repotting logi

Repotting – When should it be repotted?

Large established plants typically need repotting every 2-3 yearts. Check if roots are circling the pot or pushing up from the surface. Move up one size only. When repotting, incorporate TerraPlus Natura N and Controlled Release Fertiliser into fresh mix to support long-term nutrition.

Pest image

Pests – What pests should I watch for?

Spider mites, thrips and mealybugs can appear, especially on larger plants. Inspect leaves regularly, including the undersides. Early treatment with an insecticidal spray prevents spread.

Temerature image

Temperature – What temperature suits it best?

Monstera adansonii grows well between 18°C and 28°C. Avoid temperatures below 12°C and protect it from sudden cold drafts or extreme fluctuations.

FAQ’s

Q: Will the leaves get bigger than this?
Yes. With good light and support, new leaves can increase in size and develop more pronounced fenestrations.

Q: Can it trail instead of climb?
It can trail naturally, but climbing support encourages larger, more mature leaves.

Q: Why are there multiple plants in one pot?
Multiple stems create a fuller, denser look and help the plant establish vertical presence more quickly.

Q: Is Monstera Adansonii pet-safe?
No. It is toxic if ingested.
