Name

Commonly known as:  XL Wire Vine Hoop / Creeping Wire Vine

Botanical name: Muehlenbeckia complexa

The XL Wire Vine Hoop (Muehlenbeckia complexa) is a beautifully styled version of a naturally wandering plant. Instead of trailing freely, the fine wire-like stems have been trained around a wooden hoop, giving the plant a structured, airy shape that feels modern and architectural.

Planted in a 19 cm pot and standing approximately 80–90 cm tall, this form works particularly well where you want height without dense foliage — perfect for shelves, sideboards, desks, or as a contrast plant among broader-leafed companions. The small, rounded leaves soften the hoop shape, while the thin stems create movement and texture.

Wire Vine is adaptable and forgiving. It copes well with regular indoor conditions, responds well to light pruning, and can be gently re-trained as it grows. Over time, the plant becomes fuller on the hoop, creating a living frame that changes subtly with each season.

XL Wire Vine Hoop Care Guide

Water logo

Watering – How often should I water it?

Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Wire Vine prefers evenly moist soil but does not enjoy sitting wet. Good drainage is important, especially in a styled pot where airflow matters.

Light logo

Light – What light does a Wire Vine Hoop prefer?

Bright, indirect light is ideal. It tolerates some gentle morning sun, but harsh direct sunlight can scorch the delicate leaves. In lower light, growth slows and spacing between leaves may increase.

Humidity logo

Humidity – Does Wire Vine need high humidity?

Average household humidity is perfectly fine. This plant is not fussy about moisture in the air and generally performs well without misting. Good airflow around the hoop helps keep foliage healthy.

Soil Logo

Soil – What soil mix works best?

Use a free-draining mix that holds light moisture without compacting. We recommend our Aroid Mix or a DIY blend using Barks Unlimited Potting Soil combined with Perlite and a small amount of Bark Chips.

Fertilizing logo

Feeding – How should I fertilise it?

Feed lightly every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer using our Organic Fertiliser.
For low-maintenance feeding, a small amount of Controlled Release Fertiliser can be added at the start of the growing season.

Repotting logi

Repotting – When should I repot an XL Wire Vine Hoop?

Repot every 12–18 months if needed, stepping up only one pot size. When repotting, keep the hoop in place and gently guide new growth back onto the frame. Light pruning helps maintain the circular shape.

Pest image

Pests – What pests should I watch for?

Wire Vine is generally pest-resistant. Occasionally, aphids or spider mites may appear on soft new growth. Inspect regularly and treat early with an insecticidal spray if needed.

Temerature image

Temperature – What temperature suits it best?

Best grown between 16 °C and 26 °C. It tolerates cooler conditions better than many houseplants but should be protected from frost and hot, dry air from heaters.

FAQ’s

Q: Can I retrain the plant as it grows?
Yes. The stems are flexible and can be gently guided around the hoop or trimmed to maintain shape.

Q: Will it outgrow the hoop?
Over time it may thicken around the frame. Light pruning keeps it neat and encourages bushier growth.

Q: Can it be grown outdoors?
Yes, in mild, frost-free areas with bright shade or filtered light.

Q: Is it pet-safe?
It’s generally considered low-risk, but it’s best to keep pets from chewing any houseplants.
